Caroline’s Big Top Circus Party is easily one of my favorite themed celebrations. Every so often, a party comes together even more beautifully than imagined—and this circus birthday theme was one of those magical moments! With vibrant colors, playful animals, and nostalgic carnival touches, this celebration was full of charm and whimsy.

Circus Party Decorations

To set the tone, the dessert table featured a hand-painted, 3-D Big Top backdrop. The raised plaque and distressed finish added dimension, while a soft white ruffled table skirt brought a feminine touch to the bright colors. On each side of the table, oversized elephant standees from Shindigz added an irresistible hint of circus whimsy.

Big Top Birthday Cake & Desserts

The desserts were the true showstoppers. The centerpiece was a two-tier buttercream cake, wrapped in red and yellow ribbons and topped with a handcrafted circus tent and animal figurine. The cupcakes were equally fun—vanilla buttercream treats topped with gold flaming hoops and mini animals.

DIY tip:
Create the flaming hoops using gold pipe cleaners shaped into circles, then attach a smaller piece as a handle. Party guests absolutely loved picking their favorite cupcake and animal topper!

Carousel cake-ball pops decorated with gold vinyl horses and striped straws completed the dessert display.

To complement the sweets (and serve as gifts for the birthday girl), we added retro toys and a gumball machine to the main table for extra nostalgic charm.

Circus Party Snacks & Concessions

Across the party space, we set up a “Concessions” area filled with classic carnival snacks: fresh apples, popcorn served in kraft paper cones, cracker jacks, and peanuts. This mix of bulk and pre-packaged treats is ideal for larger events.

For favors, we kept it sweet and simple with vintage-style boxes of animal crackers tied with raffia and retro circus tags—a timeless crowd pleaser!

Circus Party Tablescape

Guests enjoyed their treats at beautiful tables draped in lined burlap linens. One of the most charming elements was the handcrafted pom-pom table runners, adding bursts of color and playful texture.

Centerpieces alternated between mason jars of fresh, natural flowers and adorable elephant toys perched on rolls of brightly colored carnival tickets.

Circus Party Activities

Entertainment was nonstop! A balloon artist created incredible balloon animals, while a face painter added colorful designs to smiling kiddos.

For photo ops, guests loved posing behind our circus cart standee and in front of the “Step Right Up” carnival photo backdrop. A custom-made flame prop quickly became the must-use accessory for photos!
